Pescafotosub (which roughly translates to "underwater photofish hunt") involves capturing photos of as wide a variety of underwater species as possible in their natural habitat.
The aim is to offer and develop a sporting activity in which underwater images of the marine environment are captured; images that allow us to appreciate its richness and biodiversity. This activity is carried out without altering the conservation status of the seabed and its biodiversity at any time.
As a sporting activity, these events allow participants to participate in one of two categories: the first is free diving (holding one’s breath, without the aid of any apparatus or equipment that allows breathing underwater), and the second is scuba diving.
Pescafotosub is not just a sport. Those who practice it—underwater sports photographers—have gained an understanding of the underwater world that is largely untapped by the scientific community. Their interpretations of their experiences may be empirical, but as fieldwork they are invaluable, especially in those areas not covered by scientific studies. This is called citizen science, and underwater photography is a major contributor to it.
