With the support of the Club de Regatas Lima, the event was held at the Chorrillos headquarters on San Lorenzo Island.
The transparent blue waters of the Chincha and San Gallan Islands, with an average temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, as well as calm seas with little to no wind, provided the perfect setting for a new freediving Pescafotosub championship as part of the XXVIII Rafael "Chicho" Suazo 2018 Spearfishing Championship. The event was characterized by highly selective and extraordinary images due to the diversity of species, which had not been seen in many years in the contest area.
For the second time, the competition was sponsored by the Association of Pisco Producers (Asociación de Productores de Pisco - APROPISCO). The Peruvian Ocean Institute (Instituto del Mar del Peru - IMARPE) conducted biological sampling of the species caught by the spearfishermen The Pescafotosub competition winner was Javier Castagnetto N.
What made this competition special was the extraordinary photographs taken at the shipwreck on Chincha Norte Island that day. The site's unique structures and clear water made for great photo opportunities.
The spearfishing and underwater photography contest was held at the Poseidon Nautical Club in Pucusana on March 16 and 17. It was organized by the Peruvian Sports Federation of Underwater Activities (FEDEPASA) and supported by the NGO Oannes, the Underwater Fishing Sports Association, and the support of the Club Nautico Poseidon of Pucusana.
Diego Chian, a young biology student from the Scientific University of the South, won the competition with some really well composed photos. Thanks to the clear waters and the more advanced equipment used by the competitors, the pictures taken show the tremendous progress in photographic quality if you compare images from the first contest that took place in 2018.

El 29 y 30 de setiembre del 2018, se realizo una nueva fecha del Campeonato Metropolitano de Pesca Submarina & Pescafotosub, auspiciado y promovido por el Club de Regatas Lima.
Another Pescafotosub a Pulmón championship took place, where Mr. Luis Alcázar Lizarraga, a member of the Rascaplayas club, was crowned the winner. The first day the competition took place on the island of Pachacamac and on the second day at the island of San Lorenzo. This contest is tradition and, as always, was attended by numerous participants. The calm seas and clear waters contributed to capturing very interesting images.
It's a tradition for the Peruvian Navy to organize a spearfishing contest during the month of October to commemorate its honored war heroe Admiral Miguel Grau. After a hiatus of several years the event is back and it took place on October 27 and 28, 2018. This time, along with the spearfishing competition, the pescafotosub (underwater photography) competition took place simultaneously.
The winner of the competition was Rascaplayas Club member Luis Alcázar Lizarraga, who after receiving his prize commented: “This is different, now you can see the fish alive in its habitat, with its natural colors and not only as an edible species”, alluding to the potential of Pescafotosub a Pulmón (freedive underwater photography, in pro-sustainability awareness efforts.
For this event we invited the Peruvian Ocean Studies Institute (Instituto del Mar del Peru - IMARPE) to carry out biological sampling of the species caught by divers in the spearfishing category, in a pilot effort to better understand the biology of the species that inhabit the coastline. This sampling is usually only carried out by IMARPE at the Artisanal Fishing Landings (Desembarcaderos Pesqueros Artesanales - DPA), so it was an opportunity to procure samples from a different venue.
Rafael “Chicho” Suazo, national spearfishing champion, died at sea while spearfishing. His youth and the hope he meant for the sport deeply affected the community of sport divers. In his memory, the Suazo family, the Regatas Club and the Spearfishing Sports Association held a championship in Paracas, as they do every year. Due to force majeure the event scheduled for November 2017 was reprogramed for May 5 to 6 in 2018, in the islands of Chincha and the island of an Gallan. The pescafotosub competition was sponsored and supported by the Asociation of Pisco prodcuers (Association of Pisco Producers - APROPISCO).
The words of Renato Antonio Bustamante, winner of the pescafotosub contest held as part of the “Chicho Suazo” Spearfishing Championship, speak volumes about the new sport. Renato is not just any spearfisherman, he is a young diver with a lot of experience, who has already been part of the Peruvian national spearfishing team in athe world's championship. He told us: "For spearfishing, the target fish must be within shooting distance of the speargun. In pescafotosub, one must get much closer to the fish with extreme care so as not to scare it away and get the picture. It is much more difficult and demanding than spearfishing itself".
This contest was the first and thus the initiation of the official Pescafotosub competitions in Peru. The conditions were not optimal as the waters were rough and turbid. But, even so, the enthusiasm of the participants was unwavering and the first photogrphic images of this new discipline were achieved.
Although the photos were not of extraordinary quality, they were the first photos taken in a Pescaotosub a Pulmón competition in Peru. We will like to thank the Esmeralda Club of Santa Maria del Mar, which provided its headquarters and nautical facilities, Mr. Abraham Gleiser and Mr. Jose Antonio Marquina of JMG SECURITY for supporting the development of the competition with their yacht and fuel, transporting the judges, picking up divers and giving control and security support to the competition, as well as Mr. Alberto Santillana Ciriani, who kindly donated an underwater camera, as the top prize for the winner, Mr. Korzh Vucetich.
